If the drop began within a rollout, hit a whole section rather than scattered URLs, and slid over days instead of falling overnight, the update is the likely cause.
If your window comes back empty, or the fall was instant and total, stop looking at algorithms. A broken tag, a noindex shipped with a template, a robots.txt edit or a migration will explain it faster, and all four are cheaper to rule out.
Most “penalties” are not penalties
Google uses the word for one thing only: a manual action, applied by a human reviewer, listed by name in the Manual Actions report in Search Console. If that report says “No issues detected”, you do not have one. You have a ranking change, which is a different problem with a different fix.
The distinction decides what you do next, which is why it is worth settling before you change anything.
A manual action is binary and reversible on request: fix the violation, file a reconsideration request, wait for a human to clear it. An algorithmic drop has no switch and nobody to appeal to. The update reassessed your pages against everyone else’s, and recovery means being reassessed again on the next run, sometimes months later.
So check Manual Actions first, then come back to the date. It is also worth ruling out a fall in link authority, which the domain authority checker will show at a glance.
Confirming it was an update
- Find the exact date. Search Console, Performance, six-month range. Note the day traffic turned.
- Check that month above. A named rollout in the window makes it a candidate.
- Rule out the technical causes. Server logs, crawl errors, an accidental noindex, a robots.txt change. These look like an overnight cliff, not a slope.
- Check your competitors. If everyone in the niche fell on the same day, it is almost certainly the algorithm. If you fell alone, suspect something on your side.
- Check Manual Actions. Security and Manual Actions in Search Console. A real penalty is listed there by name with the affected pages.
The cliff-versus-slope test does most of the work. Algorithms roll out over days to weeks. Broken tags happen at 3pm on a Tuesday.
The categories, and what each one is looking for
Core updates. Broad reassessments of content quality, relevance and E-E-A-T. Three to six a year. They do not target a tactic, they recalibrate which pages best satisfy intent, which is why they move sites that did nothing wrong.
Spam updates. Paid links, scaled AI-generated content, site reputation abuse, expired domain abuse, cloaking. Since 2020 these run through SpamBrain, Google’s machine-learning spam system.
Helpful content signals. A site-wide classifier introduced in August 2022 to find content written primarily to rank rather than to help. Folded into the core systems in 2023, so it now runs continuously rather than as a dated event.
Link updates. Penguin and its descendants, targeting link schemes and over-optimised anchors. Since Penguin 4.0 in 2016 these run in real time, and Google now devalues spam links rather than demoting the whole site for them.
Content quality updates. Panda and its descendants, originally aimed at thin and duplicate content. Absorbed into the core algorithm in 2016; the helpful content system is its modern successor.

Recovery, by what actually hit you
There is no universal fix, and applying the wrong one costs months.
After a core update, audit the pages that lost the most and compare them against whatever now outranks them. You are looking for gaps: missing depth, missing credentials, missing original data, missing evidence anyone involved has done the thing. Recovery takes at least one full cycle, so three to six months before you know.
After a spam update aimed at links, audit the backlink profile and build a disavow file for the clearly toxic ones: link farms, irrelevant foreign-language directories with no traffic, anything you would be embarrassed to be asked about. Submit it, then go and earn real links. The file does not remove anything, it asks Google to ignore it.
After a helpful content demotion, understand that the classifier is site-wide, so you cannot fix it page by page. You are changing the overall ratio: delete the weak pages and redirect them, rewrite the salvageable ones with something genuinely first-hand, or consolidate several thin pages into one that earns its place. Sites that recovered generally spent 12 to 18 months doing it.
