Ahrefs: what it does, what it costs

The strongest independent link index, with clicks data behind keyword selection.

Used in real workFree plan Checked 18 August 2026

What Ahrefs is

Ahrefs runs its own crawler and maintains one of the largest independent backlink indexes in the industry, which is the actual product — Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, Content Gap and Rank Tracker are interfaces onto it. If the question you are paying to answer involves who links to whom, this is the tool with the best chance of having the data.

The quieter advantage is clicks data. Keywords Explorer reports estimated clicks alongside search volume, and the gap between the two is the useful number: a query with 8,000 searches and 900 clicks is a query being answered on the results page. On a SaaS keyword map that distinction decides which terms are worth a page and which are worth a citation.

Two things constrain it. There is no free trial, so evaluation means paying first. And credit metering on the lower tiers turns a heavy research day into a wall — the plan you can afford and the plan that survives a full competitive audit are often not the same one.

What you can use it for

  • Analyse a competitor's backlink profile and referring-domain growth over time
  • Pick keywords on estimated clicks rather than search volume alone
  • Find content gaps against several competitors at once
  • Track brand mentions across AI answers with the Brand Radar add-on

The features that matter for SEO

Each one says what it does and the SEO job it serves. A vendor feature list without that second half tells you nothing you could not read on their own site.

Site Explorer

Returns a domain's or URL's backlink profile, referring-domain history, organic keywords and top pages.

The starting point for competitor analysis, and the report that tells you whether a rival's rankings are built on links or on content.

Keywords Explorer

Reports search volume alongside estimated clicks, difficulty, parent topic and SERP history.

Clicks against volume is how you spot queries that get answered on the results page and never send traffic — a zero-click term is a citation target, not a page.

Content Gap

Compares your rankings against several competitors and lists the keywords they hold and you do not.

Produces a commercial-page roadmap from demand competitors have already validated, rather than from a brainstorm.

Site Audit

Crawls a site with JavaScript rendering and reports technical issues with severity and affected URLs.

Adequate as the scheduled health check for most sites, and the rendering support matters on a modern JavaScript stack.

Rank Tracker

Tracks positions by keyword, location and device, with share-of-voice reporting.

Share of voice across a keyword set is a better read on a programme's direction than movement on individual terms.

Brand Radar

Tracks brand mentions across AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok.

AI-visibility measurement inside a tool you already pay for, which avoids a second subscription for teams starting out on GEO work.

An add-on from $199 a month on top of a plan, with prompt checks metered separately.

Free SEO toolbar

Shows on-page and link metrics for any page and inside search results.

The fastest read on a prospect or a competitor without opening the platform, and it works on the free plan.

Strengths and limitations

Strengths

  • An independent crawler and one of the largest link indexes available, which is the whole reason to buy it
  • Clicks data alongside volume makes keyword selection materially more accurate
  • A fast, uncluttered interface with very little that exists only to fill a feature matrix
  • Bootstrapped and profitable, with no visible pressure to bundle unrelated products

Limitations

  • No free trial. Evaluation means paying for a month first
  • Credit metering on Starter and Lite makes a heavy research day hit a wall
  • No paid-search or advertising data worth using, which is Semrush's clearest advantage
  • API access only appears on Enterprise at $1,499 a month
  • AI-visibility tracking is an add-on from $199 a month rather than part of a plan

Who it is for, and who should skip it

Worth it if

  • Backlink analysis and link-building prospecting are central to your work
  • You want keyword decisions made on clicks rather than volume
  • You value a fast interface over breadth of modules

Skip it if

  • You need paid-search competitor data
  • You want to evaluate before paying
  • Your budget cannot absorb credit limits on research-heavy weeks

Alternatives to Ahrefs

Each one answers when it is the better choice, which is the only thing a list of competitors is useful for.

  • Semrush Choose it when you need paid-search intelligence and client reporting alongside organic research.
  • Moz Pro Choose it when the entry price matters more than index depth, or Domain Authority is the metric your stakeholders already quote.
  • Google Search Console Choose it when you need what actually happened on your own site rather than an estimate of it — and it is free.

Questions

Does Ahrefs have a free trial?

No. Ahrefs Webmaster Tools is free for sites you verify ownership of, which gives you a site audit and your own backlink data, but the research tools require a paid plan from the first day. As of 18 August 2026 the cheapest is Starter at $29 a month.

What is the difference between search volume and clicks in Ahrefs?

Volume is how many people search a term; clicks is how many of them click a result. A large gap means the results page answers the query itself — through a featured snippet, a knowledge panel or an AI answer. Those keywords are worth being cited on, not worth a dedicated page.

Which Ahrefs plan includes the API?

Enterprise, at $1,499 a month as of 18 August 2026. No lower tier includes API access.
