Backlink analysis tools let you query a crawled index of links: who links to whom, with what anchor text, from where, and when it changed.
What Backlink Analysis tools do
In this category the index is the product and everything else is an interface onto it. That has a blunt consequence — a tool with a smaller or staler index will give you a confidently wrong answer, and you will not know unless you check a second one. Counts differ by an order of magnitude between tools on the same domain, so the number that matters is not "how many links" but "how many that this index knows about". The most actionable report any of them produces is the gap: domains linking to competitors and not to you.
